Contemporary art differs from art of previous eras because the most notorious artists are the ones who stand out from the crowd and use unconventional techniques, mediums and concepts. An artist in the 21st century should have a strong sense of identity and the confidence to dive into their work head first. They should also have knowledge of techniques and art history.

Art History influences and inspires artists’ work, and vice versa. Art history and art education go hand in hand, as do art and art education.

Should studio art professors be prepared as teachers? #4050eleekParticipantI think studio art professors should without a doubt receive at least some training as teachers, because that is their job after all: to teach. It seems obvious to me but for some reason it is not to many people in the education system. Many artists become studio art professors because they need the money, rather than because they want to influence students and help them become better artists. They take advantage of the studio facilities yet offer little guidance to their students. This sets an example for students as professors, and those students who go on to teach art may follow in the footsteps of their apathetic teaching methods.

Is emphasis on content and finding personal voice important? #4044eleekParticipantPersonal voice and the emphasis of content are very important in the creation and teaching of art. Without content, art is meaningless. Personal voice is what makes an artist unique and stand out from the rest. While it is useful to have a broad range of style and techniques, the artists who are most successful are generally the ones who have developed a distinct voice and a unique style. The most influential works of art are the ones that send a message or evoke emotions in the viewer.
