To be present for students to observe the act of making art. So they may see the process from concept to realization.

October 9, 2014 at 3:42 pm in reply to: 2. Is emphasis on content and finding personal voice important? #4058Beth ClaytonParticipantI do believe that content is important. There is something to be said for making dada style art because it gets creative juices flowing but I think the most educational part about making art is having a concept, following through, allowing it to grow and change, and bringing it to a realization.

Relationship between art, art history and art education programs? #4051Beth ClaytonParticipantI think in college you are either going to be an art teacher or not. If you aren’t then why be required to undergo any art education curriculum? However Art education classes should be offered to studio art and art history majors who may be interested in going in that direction.

October 9, 2014 at 3:35 pm in reply to: 6. Why so much emphasis on hands-on artmaking in both k-12 and undergraduate art education? #4045Beth ClaytonParticipantI think that hands on art making is probably the most important part of art education whether students will become participating artists or not. The act of doing and making art teaches skills like problem solving and critical thinking. It broadens students minds and allows them to explore their options and develop their concepts as they go. If art classes were more talking than doing then they would just be art theory classes and I think that would just feed into the type-A mindless drone society that most school are already trying to create.
